Mistake #1: Becoming Emotionally Attached to Your Business, Brand, or Product
I was so emotionally attached to my very first startup—a Greek Iced Tea beverage company, launched 15 years ago. The recipe was my grandmother’s and very close to my heart. Unfortunately, the business was failing for various reasons, but my emotional attachment kept me hanging on for about two years too long. During that time, I could have started and grown another profitable company!
Mistake #2: Not Regularly Updating and Understanding Your Customer Journey
Since we are so deeply involved in the day-to-day operations of our business, it’s crucial to bring in a fresh set of eyes every quarter, or at least once a year, to review the entire customer journey. There could be broken links, too many steps to check out, unclear messaging that could be stronger, or an automated email that is broken or outdated. By neglecting to stay on top of your customer journey and experience, you are literally leaving money on the table.
Mistake #3: Hiring Slow, Firing Fast
One of the most expensive mistakes a startup or growing company can make is hiring the wrong person. I love working with contractors on specific projects, and if it’s a good fit with great results, we can then discuss a bigger role in the company or more consistent work. When hiring an employee, always offer a 3-6 month temp-to-hire position. It’s essential to test the waters.
Mistake #4: Putting the Wrong People in the Wrong Seats
Maybe you hired someone for a specific position, but it turns out they’re not thriving in that role. However, you notice they have other skill sets that could help them excel in another role within the company. It’s crucial to recognize this early and make the necessary adjustments.
Mistake #5: Overcomplicating or Assuming What Your Customers Want
Simplicity is key. Don’t overcomplicate your offerings or assume you know exactly what your customers want without doing the research or asking for feedback. Misreading customer needs can lead to wasted resources and lost opportunities.
Mistake #6: Lack of Organization
Though listed as number five, this could easily be at the top of the list. Whether you choose Google Drive, Notion, Asana, Monday, or ClickUp, there are countless tools available to help you structure and organize your business effectively.

Bonus Tip: Avoid Redundancy and Train Your Team to Do the Same
Don’t waste time by repeating tasks or handling things inefficiently. For example, don’t go into your email inbox without the intention of actually responding. Make it a habit to document processes and trainings, so you and your team can work more efficiently.
