BBW MEMBER INTERVIEW: Karissa Richtmyer, Founder + Owner of The Nurse Piercer, LLC

What is your name?

Karissa Richtmyer, BSN, RN, CCRN

What is your title?

Founder + Owner

What is your business name?

What is your website URL?

www.thenursepiercer.com

What is your Instagram handle?

How long have you been a Boston Business Women member?

Been following along on socials for a while but recently joined the inner circle.

Where are you based? How did you end up there?

Walpole, but I travel to clients throughout MA

Tell us more about your company! What do you do and what pushed you to start?

I started my business after hours of researching safe ear piercing options for my daughter and found very few options so I decided to fix the problem myself! I used my background as a registered nurse to practice safe, sterile single use ear piercing for families throughout the greater Boston area. I come to you and pierce babies, children and adults of all ages.

What is your definition of success? How do you know when you’ve reached it?

I think the moment you can sit back and realize ``I'm really happy with what I do AND I get paid for it.`` If you can turn a dream into a reality and live it day to day, you've aced it.

Tell us about your most transformational moment as an entrepreneur?

After about 3 months into my ear piercing journey, I realized that this wasn't just a hobby or side hustle and that I was building a business that helps people! I started solving a problem that moms have been dealing with for years.

What was one of your biggest challenges in business?

Knowing absolutely nothing about running a business or being an entrepreneur! I had no idea what I was in for in terms of managing all the behind the scenes tasks that I didn't even know existed.

How do you handle the harder days? The struggles? Those moments when you feel like giving up?

Being a full time ICU, business owner and mom of a 13 month old is overwhelming at times. What keeps me going is knowing that I'm showing my daughter that she can achieve any crazy idea, and that her mom followed her dreams.

How has being a Boston Business Women Inner Circle member positively influenced your life + business?

Connected me with other mom business owners and gave me the ambition and optimism to push harder and speak louder about my business. It taught me that my idea is unique and different, and people want to be a part of it.

Tell us about your most proud moment in your career.

I had a client who got her ears pierced at Claires a few years ago, the gun got stuck in her ear and the piercing got infected. I repierced her ears for her, in her own home and she burst into tears of joys because of how happy she was. She had a much better experience and now could wear earrings confidently and safely.

Who is the woman behind your business? What does she like? How does she spend her free time? What does she value?

I'm a wife, girl mom, dog mom and a proud VA nurse. I've spent my entire career caring for veterans who have sacrificed so much for all of us at the Boston VA. I am an avid true crime junkie, Thai food lover and a massive Swiftie! I value quiet nights taking walks with the whole family and a mean Mojito.

What makes you stand out from others in your field? What do you do differently?

There is no one else that does what I do. Some pediatricians offer ear piercings but many require you to be a patient or have months long waitlists. Other options include tattoo parlors or kiosks at the mall, neither are family friendly. I'm a board certified critical care nurse that comes to your home to pierce your child's ears. I create a comfortable, warm, inviting environment and a stress free experience!

Where can we keep up with you? What social media platforms do you use the most?

Instagram and my business Facebook page!
