Tell us more about your company! What do you do and what pushed you to start?
The Run Rx provides concierge performance physical therapy and personal training services for runners and the modern athlete. We are Doctors of Physical Therapy with extensive experience in personal training, rehabilitation, sports performance and detailed running analysis looking to bridge the gap between healthcare and wellness.
I own and operate The Run Rx and work as a physical therapist and trainer. I was pushed to start this business after years of working in the very sterile, reactive, insurance-dictated healthcare system. It was a system that had me feeling overworked and under- appreciated and didn't allow me to care for my patients how I wanted. It was also a setting that I feel saw a lesser level of care and outcomes especially for active individuals seeking solutions. I wanted to combine performance and fitness with expert, doctorate level healthcare providers who had a specific niche and created a warmer more boutique experience.
What is your definition of success? How do you know when you’ve reached it?
My definition of success is creating a product and environment that has mutual benefit for both myself and my staff as well as the patients/clients who we see. For me and my staff, that's the ability to care for our patients how we want and be able to live with more financial freedom without burnout. Simultaneously knowing that our patients and clients are also getting excellent care and being confident our services are worth every penny of their investment for their long term wellness.
I think this is a constantly evolving thing that we have provided so far but will continue to adapt to provide the best care for our patients and quality of life/work for ourselves.
Tell us about your most transformational moment as an entrepreneur?
The most transformational moments were definitely the moments early on and making a scary ``jump``. From first deciding to leave the safe job and salary to go out on my own. Even after going it on my own I maintained part-time jobs to make sure I never saw a decrease in income for my family. When I got too time poor I realized for me to ever grow this business I would have to focus on it 100% even if it meant making it work financially for a while.
Tell us about your most proud moment in your career.
My most proud moment has been the opening of our new state of the art space in Somerville! I started my business in a tiny little room rented in the back of a small office space on a month to month lease and made the most of it. The decision to do a move happened earlier than I would have planned for due to the building being sold. All though I wasn't quite at the volume I wanted to be I made the leap and bet on myself. We found a bare bones commercial space and did a full build out to establish our upgraded and more permanent new home!
Who is the woman behind your business? What does she like? How does she spend her free time? What does she value?
I am a runner myself and fitness enthusiast. I enjoy playing and watching all sports and spending time with my family and my goldendoodle Ziggy. Although I have learned to LOVE working now that I work for myself, I still very much made the decision to start my business because I valued the work-life balance that gives me flexibility to do these things.
What makes you stand out from others in your field? What do you do differently?
We stand out because we offer performance/fitness services provided my doctorate level healthcare providers and healthcare services from fitness professionals to give you the best possible care. We also have a very specific niche of working with runners. Running is a sport/activity that participants are VERY passionate about. There are lots of generalists out there who you can see but if there is so much passion for something, see the people who specialize in exactly that and speak your language. Our setting is also a fuller experience than the sterile healthcare setting or fitness space. We've got a warm welcoming recover corner and complimentary kombucha or cold brew after every session to round out a workout.
