BBW MEMBER INTERVIEW: Tina Morin, Owner/Founder

What is your name?

Tina Morin.

What is your occupation?

I am an Owner/Founder.

What is your business name?

How long have you been a Boston Business Women’s Member?

Less than 1 year.

What is your instagram handle?

What is your linked in URL?

Were you born and raised in Boston? If not, what brought you here?

Yes! Born and raised in Plymouth MA.

Tell us more about your job or company and what led you to your career?

My Gym, MSC Strength & Conditioning is a semi private training facility. We love traditional tools for strength like barbells, dumbbells and body weight exercises, but we really love our Kettlebells and it is our favorite tool of choice (...that's how most people find us!). After 8 years in Corporate Finance I decided to explore my passion of helping people through fitness...specifically through strength training. I went back to school to pursue a career in Physical Therapy. While in school I was working as a Personal Trainer and a Pilates Instructor and really developed my own style of training and realized that coaching and post rehab training was the direction in which I was headed and decided the only place I could train the way I really wanted would be in my own facility. I wanted to create a space where people felt comfortable, where they could get curious about new tools and styles of strength training, and felt safe.. I wanted to foster a community where people of all different experience levels could learn and grow together to get stronger for a better life outside the gym. And perhaps most importantly, I wanted to create a space where people could build relationships with each other and have a real home away from home where they reach all their goals, and have a great time doing it. That's how MSC was born.

Our Program: The mechanics - our program provides every member with a personalized strength training program. Each program will address any underlying weaknesses/mobility limitations through corrective exercises, will take into account the level at which the member is starting and progress them safely, and their goals that they wish to accomplish.

The method- We believe strength is the key to longevity. Being strong helps you to lead a better life, get out of pain, and ...it feels pretty damn amazing to feel StrongAF. We are extremely hands on in our semi private sessions (…it’s like private training with buddies!) and that allows us time to build relationships with all our members and teach the tools of building habits in the gym that carry over to other healthy habits in your life. We chat about all things health and wellness and support each member, give them resources and check in regularly for accountability.

The magic- We do things a ‘lil differently around here:) it may not be for everyone, but it works for us! Consistency is the key element of building strength, and people won't be consistent if they are dreading going to the gym. So we do our best to get weird and have fun (It’s not uncommon to see coaches in costumes, walk in to a random party for no reason, or hang out have coffee and cocktails after class). We go above and beyond to reach out regularly and connect with our clients and support them in anything they need. We celebrate our clients, celebrate our coaches, and have lots of laughs.

We are currently located at 50 Finnell Drive Suite 6 in Weymouth in a 2500 sq foot facility with lot’s of space to get strong and have a good time:)

What would your clients say about you and your company?

I will tell you! 🙂 Here are some member testimonials:

''I joined MSC in August 2018, 3 months after having my first baby. I had never been a''gym goer'' and would regularly open and cancel big box memberships because I wasn't going enough. A friend recommended MSC and it sounded a little terrifying, but the endorsement made it hard to miss. The things that would normally be scary about a new gym were exactly what makes MSC so easy to be a part of. The long-time veterans of MSC were not unwelcoming, but always ready to greet newcomers and celebrate your wins. The programs are not as complex as they appear, but easily modified to meet your abilities where they're at. There are so many kinds of bodies at MSC, and truly no judgment among members. And of course, there is the amazingly knowledgeable and endlessly supportive staff. Each of them is so fun, kind, and works so hard to help us achieve our goals. I came to MSC for a hobby and stayed for the workouts in search of a casual fitness routine. Nearly 3 years later I couldn't imagine leaving, because I feel very much a part of a community that cheers for my success and supports me while I work on getting there.'' - Kaila A.

''I'd been at MSC for about 3 months when Tina, who knew about my back pain, offered a Sunday afternoon clinic on back pain/movement. I jumped on that. After about 10 minutes she came up to me and said,''you know your glutes aren't firing and your mid-back isn't moving at all. Also, you're not breathing right.'' She gave me exercises to do and a program that we worked on together. After about 6 weeks I started to notice improvement. Fast forward four years, and I'm swinging bells and getting stronger and more balanced every day. I'm also running again. I'm walking long distances everyday. I can pick things up and put them down without fear of back pain. I can now do all the dishes without crying (#happy/not happy). My PCP is amazed and so is my husband. Frankly, so am I!'' - Lisa W.

''You will find exceptionally knowledgeable staff and really great gym community members. You will find a safe space to get stronger and set goals you may never have thought you'd be focusing on. MSC is the real deal when it comes to personalized programming in a fun, supportive environment.'' - Aileen B.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Don't treat others the way you want to be treated...treat others the way THEY want to be treated.

What is your favorite book?

This is like picking a favorite child! I Love to read... I will pick one I enjoyed a lot recently, ''Ego is the Enemy'' Ryan Holiday

What is your secret weapon? An app, a tool, a organization method, anything?! (Can be a personal or professional life tool)

The Traction EOS Style/Method of Holding meetings and tracking action items. It has made my team incredibly organized and accountable!

What is your most recent WIN? How are you slaying it in your career or business?

I truly feel I win most days with a team of ROCKSTARS, but a personal and professional win for me was being asked and given the opportunity to speak at my mastermind's group retreat in march alongside industry leaders, my mentors, and people I look up to immensely. It was an honor. My mastermind is Business For Unicorns, Lead by Mark Fisher and Michael Keeler of Mark Fisher Fitness in NYC and I was fortunate enough to Speak with Mark, Michael and other leaders in fitness like Pete Dupuis & Eric Cressey of Cressey Sports & Performance to name a few and it was an unbelievable experience!

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Spend time understanding what your employees' dreams and aspirations are, and support them and help them grow in to that job whether it is with your company or somewhere else. Everyone will leave at some point, but you have the opportunity to grow an incredible network of humans that will leave on good terms to do what what they love, and if you do that, you will always find even more amazing humans to fill their role.

How do you enjoy your free time?

I love to train, be outside, snowboard, spend time with family and friends, especially my husband Tim and my two fur babies - Chocolate Lab Louie and Australian Cattle Dog Mabel.

What is something that not many people know about you?

I am sort of an open book...but once you get to know my wildly energetic, spastic, outgoing and boisterous personality you may be surprised that I was a ballet dancer and a competitive figure skater in my youth (somewhere along the way I lost all poise and grace) and that I actually very much value my quiet/alone time.
