BBW MEMBER INTERVIEW: Lisa Lam, Actor/Model

What is your name and occupation?
Lisa Lam, Actor/Model
How long have you been a Boston Business Women’s Member?
Less than a year.
What is your Instagram handle?
@lisaylam
Were you born and raised in Boston? If not, what brought you here?
Yes
Tell us more about your job or company and what led you to your career?
It was my dream since I was young to be an actor and model. But I didn't think it was a viable career option for me, so I became a Certified Public Accountant instead, and was a Tax Accountant for 10 years. During this time I had 2 kids. While raising them to believe that they can be anything they want to be, I realized that this applied to me too. It was a tough decision, but last year, I left my full-time, established career to be chase my lifelong dream.
What would your clients say about you and your company?
They would say I'm motivated and always eager to learn and improve.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
``You are exactly where you're supposed to be.`` When I first started acting full-time, I was very unsure of myself. I kept thinking, ``I'm too old for this. I don't have enough experience.`` I kept wondering where my career would be if I had actually had the confidence to chase my dreams at a younger age. But when someone said this to me, it somehow calmed me. I realized those years spent as a Tax Accountant weren't wasted. In that time, I had learned other skill sets and gained experiences that would only contribute to acting.
What is your secret weapon? An app, a tool, a organization method, anything?! (Can be a personal or professional life tool)
My secret weapon is a good support system. In 2017, I had the idea to start my own event company. I didn't have any experience or connections to the event industry at the time, so I started attending industry and networking events. This allowed me to meet many entrepreneurs in the field - people that I could bounce ideas off of and talk things through with. My events company didn't work out, but I am grateful for the new friends I made, because I know that it would have been so much more tough trying to navigate everything on my own.
What is your most recent WIN? How are you slaying in your career or business?
I got a commercial and print agent. I'm slaying it in my career by continually improving myself through taking classes and rehearsing.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
It is not selfish to make decisions for your own happiness. You are the one who has to live the consequences.
How do you enjoy your free time?
In my free time, I like to do arts and crafts with my children. I also like hanging out/talking with my friends.
What is something that not many people know about you?
I was my fifth grade spelling bee champion. 😀
