BBW MEMBER INTERVIEW WITH: Jamie Steinfeld, Owner of Donkey Beach Gear

What is your name and occupation?
Jamie Steinfeld, Owner of Donkey Beach Gear
How long have you been a Boston Business Women’s Member?
Less than a year
What is your instagram handle?
Were you born and raised in Boston? If not, what brought you here?
No. I was born in Dallas, Texas and raised in NYC and Westchester, NY. I moved to Boston in 2013 to be closer to friends and my now-husband was attending Babson College to earn his MBA at the time.
Tell us more about your job or company and what led you to your career?
Donkey Beach Gear is my new company and brand. We just launched earlier in 2019 and our first product is a line of sunglasses called the Rozzie, which are named after my mom. Our sunglasses are unique, fashionable and functional. They are polarized and offer extra sun protection with their foldable shields, which block side sun. We have a line of clothing that can be worn on and off the beach. Donkey Beach Gear creates quality products for a fun, active life. I am an artist, I love fashion and spend as much time outdoors as possible. Donkey Beach Gear is where my creativity, style and passion for movement all come together.
What would your clients say about you and your company?
Our sunglasses are unique, funky and high quality. Our shirts are fun and comfortable. Our clients would say that Donkey Beach Gear is a fun brand and values quality, community and being active.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Talk to strangers. Connecting with other people in the world isn't just good manners, it's good for business. You'd be surprised at what can come from a simple hello to someone next to you on the plane or walking down the street.
What is your favorite book?
I've been reading a lot of business planning books lately. Otherwise, Far From the Tree is near to my heart.
What is your secret weapon? An app, a tool, a organization method, anything?! (Can be a personal or professional life tool)
I am extremely organized (used to be a professional organizer) and I value a great task management system - that's why I use Asana for my tasks, projects and notes.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Keep creating. Keep drawing. Keep thinking. Don't care so much about what other people think of you. You do you!
How do you enjoy your free time?
I love being outside - my husband and I surf, play tennis, paddleboard, hike and go for walks around our neighborhood in JP. I spend a lot of time with friends too!
What is something that not many people know about you?
I was adopted, have reunited with my birth family and have 11 nieces and nephews (10 in Texas).
