BBW Member interview with: Emily Smith, Wellness Advocate

What is your name and occupation?
Emily Smith, Wellness Advocate
What is your instagram handle?
@guidetowholeness
How long have you been a Boston Business Women’s Member?
Less than a year.
Were you born and raised in Boston? If not, what brought you here?
I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland where my parents met. We moved to Boston for my dad's job relocation in the first year I was born, so I was raised here
Tell us more about your job or company and what led you to your career?
As a wellness advocate for doTERRA, I show and teach people how to take control of their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being and empower their self care naturally. I hold weekly classes both in person and online and work with people on resolving current symptoms they are experiencing. I have been into wellness since I was young, making homemade face masks and body scrubs using Klutz books. Then in the last year after my dad passed away, I was prescribed Zoloft. I didn't like how it made me feel numb and apathetic after a certain point with tons of side affects, and I knew there had to be a more natural way of managing my mood. Along with meditation, yoga, exercise, seeing a therapist, and healthy eating, I was (re) introduced to oils and fell in love with the concept of empowering others' self care naturally. Now I am no longer on any medication (prescription or OTC), I'm completely sober and I use the essential oils internally, topically, and aromatically to feel happy and healthy.
What would your clients say about you and your company?
We share the highest quality goods in the world, using ethical and sustainable practices. The company partners with other organizations to support social justice themes, and developed the first 7 step quality testing standard called Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade. It is working against sex trafficking, bringing feminine hygiene solutions to developing countries, paying farmers who source fairly and on time, and more. We are empowering people all over the world to grow personally.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
``Fail forward`` I received this advice in the last year, and before that I grew up with perfectionist tendencies that were enforced by society and family expectations. Now that I understand you have to fail in order to learn, I can take calculated risks instead of staying paralyzed without taking action at all.
What’s your favorite book?
Shambahla: The Sacred Path of the Warrior
What’s your secret weapon?
Simply setting reminders with my action items in my phone's calendar app!
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Be your unique self, never settle and don't focus on what others think
What is something that not many people know about you?
I'm a childhood leukemia cancer survivor
